Hey I’m Warren Sr. **Queen Khalifa: Empire of XI** is a project that traces its roots back to my middle school days, sparked by a simple assignment from Ms. Goshe. She encouraged us to choose any book from the library for a report, and my ancestors guided me to “The Kon-Tiki Expedition” by Thor Heyerdahl. This eye-opening read revealed the biases in historical narratives, particularly the Euro-centric lens that often marginalizes the contributions of Black people worldwide.
Heyerdahl’s account of sailing a primitive raft across the Pacific Ocean in 1947 challenged conventional beliefs about ancient colonization and highlighted the need to revisit our understanding of history with truth and accuracy. This realization prompted me to reflect on the misinformation that has shaped our perceptions, perpetuating false narratives that diminish the achievements of Black and Brown civilization builders.
The story of Queen Khalifa, the warrior queen after whom California is named, exemplifies the importance of uncovering and sharing untold histories. Through this project, we aim to illuminate overlooked narratives, challenge misconceptions, and inspire a reevaluation of our collective past. “Oji Samuel Blackston”
I am Oji Samuel Blackston, a proud retired educator, director, writer, father, grandfather, and husband. My journey began in Baltimore, MD where I was born then moved to Bel Air, MD where I was raised. I attended Central Consolidated School but graduated from Hereford High School in Parkton, MD. I am also a U.S. Marine Corps Vet who served in Vietnam, I carry the values of discipline and dedication with me. After my service, I worked at the main post office in downtown Baltimore before pursuing my education further. I graduated from RETS and made my way to California, where I earned my master’s degree from San Francisco State University. Then joining with Warren and became founding members of FAD Productions. Our passion for storytelling led us to produce the Juneteenth documentary celebration, were we honored to win first place at the Bay Area Cable Excellence Award. My career as an educator flourished as I taught drama at Contra Costa Community College and television production at Laney College in Oakland. I later joined the teacher’s union and taught elementary school at Nystrom Elementary School and retired in 2018. Now, Warren and I have come together to share a fantastic story we have uncovered through our extensive research. We invite you to join us on this incredible journey as we explore the remarkable legacy of Queen Khalifa.
